Do vloggers hide behind masks and fake personae? Or do we really dig down and expose ourselves through our vlogs? That was the question asked by SydTheSkeptic over at Vloggerheads recently. Here's my answer:

First off, one of the many, many new video websites I've been playing with is 12seconds.tv - It's kind of like a cross between YouTube and Twitter: a video site, where every video is only 12 seconds long. Why? "Because anything longer is boring." It can be a bit of a challenge to say what you want to say in only 12 seconds, but it turns out it's quite easy to make an ass of yourself.

One thing they do over there is have a "daily challenge" - They post a question or topic that you must answer in, of course, 12 seconds. At the end of the day, they choose a winner from the answers posted. The other day, the topic was "tell somebody that you love them" and this was my winning entry:

12 challenge: Tell someone that you love them. on 12seconds.tv

Now that I've written a really long blog to go along with a very stupid 12 second video, I'll give you the address of my channel over there: 12seconds.tv/channel/kenrg

It seems odd that there've been no postings here for a week or so when I've made several videos. A few have been on 12Seconds.TV, but they're not really worth talking about or taking the trouble to post here.

What's been more exciting are the videos I've made for the new VloggerHeads video blogger community site (right now, that link will only show you that the site is "invite only"). This is the evolution of the video site I've been discussing, visualizing, conceptualizing, and debating with Paul (Renetto), Tom (tlg847), and Peri (PeriUrban/UrbanBlog) since about February 2007 in one form or another.

That core group has been expanded, Charlie (josephbeuys) joined us in February 2008, and Esther (faintstarlite) joined us just barely a month ago. Add to that Maarten and a couple of other tech-minded folks, and just over a week ago, a pre-alpha test site was finally launched.

After a year and a half of talking, it's been pretty amazing to actually have a site that's working. It's far from perfect yet, and still missing some of the key features that we've dreamed of, but it's happening, and it will all be there soon.

I know, I should save this blog post till I'm able to get everybody in, but it's just too exciting to sit on. Right now, we're only to 50 hand-picked members (some vloggers, some tech people), but we're slowly cranking out more invitations. If you are interested, and know how to contact me, let me know and I'll put you on my invite list as we can bring in more people.

And, hopefully, someday soon, I'll be making an announcement here that it's open to the public. Till then, thanks for your support, and I look forward to seeing you around the vloggerhood.

A good 'Tube friend of mine, 21stCenturyCat (Steve), posted a video a day or two ago in which he recounted a "RL" friend telling him that he was getting too much of his self worth from YouTube. She said that it was unhealthy for him to rely on a web site to make him happy. And Steve is such a nice guy that he took her to heart, and actually questioned whether or not he should be allowed to enjoy YouTube as much as he does.

My answer? There's nothing wrong with getting encouragement and kudos from any source, and enjoying it, even from something as impermanent as an online community. But, somehow, it took me four minutes to spit that out:
