A good 'Tube friend of mine, 21stCenturyCat (Steve), posted a video a day or two ago in which he recounted a "RL" friend telling him that he was getting too much of his self worth from YouTube. She said that it was unhealthy for him to rely on a web site to make him happy. And Steve is such a nice guy that he took her to heart, and actually questioned whether or not he should be allowed to enjoy YouTube as much as he does.

My answer? There's nothing wrong with getting encouragement and kudos from any source, and enjoying it, even from something as impermanent as an online community. But, somehow, it took me four minutes to spit that out:

An update vlog on a number of things, including the Judge's reversal in a controversial decision in the Viacom V. YouTube case, the subtle difference between evil and stupidity, whether or not I'll be going to SouthTube in October, Big George (my cat)'s health, and a couple of other things. Sounds like a boring vlog, but look at the pretty scenery.

The judge in the Viacom v YouTube/Google copyright case has ruled that YouTube/Google have to turn over our private user data of every video viewed on the site, since it launched in 2005 (New York Times article). Is it time to boycott Viacom? Or is it time to stop watching YouTube?

Who says you need ideas to make a video? Just because you have nothing to say is no reason to participate in the YouTube community. If you want to make a video, just carry your camera around with you and start filming any old time. Then, just for extra effect, put a #1 in the title to give the illusion that the random bit of video you just posted is part of a well-thought-out series of videos still to come.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you now, "Lunch with kenrg #1: Kirk's Steakburgers."

This is the story of the "first video that I never made" and the circumstances and people who inspired it. Do you have a story about an event or a person that got you to start blogging or vlogging or otherwise taking part in an online community? If so, I'd love to hear it.
